Maritime Domain Awareness

Operation Phakisa

Phakisa presentation.001

Operation Phakisa is an initiative from the South African Government to fast track the implementation of its National Development Plan. It will initially address two key sectors, the ocean economy and e-health. Monitoring activity within the continental shelf forms a critical part of this operation and requires a dedicated low-cost solution.

F’SATI at CPUT has agreements with both the Department of Science and Technology and the Department of Environmental Affairs for the development of nano-satellite based solutions for Phakisa. ZACUBE-2, the next generation of CubSat currently developed by the F’SATI team will be a pre-cursor mission to a constellation of nano-satellites that will be engineered by CPUT and its consortium over the next 4 years.

Scifest 2015

scifest 2015 2

scifest 2015 1

F’SATI contributed to the Scifest Africa (South Africa’s National Science Festival) 2015 event by conducting the following exhibitions:

  • Displaying of F’SATI’s satellite models
  • Interactive exhibitions of the Plasma Lamp and Electric Circuit Beeper
  • Videos demonstrating satellite related concepts i.e. videos on satellite orbits, rocket launching, satellite development, CanSat launching etc.
  • Daily CubeSat workshops twice a day where were included the above mentioned and gave learners and all visitors practical experience on how an interface/ software is used to make sense of the signals/ data received from satellites and translate it to readable information.

Scifest Africa was the first Festival of its kind on the African continent and was launched in 1997 as a high profile, national event to promote a culture of science in a festive way.

The Scifest Africa event takes place annually in late March or early April at the Grahamstown, Eastern Cape.
